Day 1 - Sculpting

Abigail will demonstrate the techniques she has developed to sculpt animal forms in newspaper, cardboard and wire. The day will then be spent sculpting the animal of your choice with her guidance.

Having applied the paper mâché layers, the sculptures will be left to dry overnight.

Day 2 - Painting

Abigail will start the day demonstrating some basic painting techniques using acrylic paint, leaving you the rest of the day to paint your wonderful animal sculptures.

This workshop is aimed at adults and suitable for all abilities. Groups are kept small, 4-8 people, to enable Abigail to offer each person the time and assistance they might require.

Join Abigail for a 2-day paper mâché workshop at her new east London studio, and make some wonderful wild animal heads to hang on your wall!

Day 1 – Sculpting and Paper Mâché

The day will start with a demonstration of some of the techniques you can use to sculpt your animal heads, which require various levels of skill, so there’s something achievable for every ability level.

The animal heads I create are mostly stylized pieces in my own style rather than close studies of the animals themselves, so you may wish to play around with your own style, making sketches of stylized animals or you might wish to go for a realistic study. Either way it’s best to come prepared with your ideas, sketches and images so you’re ready to get making once I’ve demonstrated the techniques.

You’ll spend the rest of the day creating your pieces so that the paper mâché is on by the end of the day and they can dry overnight.

The number you’ll manage will depend very much on your experience or the size/complexity of the piece/s you create, but everyone should have at least one finished piece by the end of the day.

Day 2 – Painting and Finishing

With your pieces now dry, we’ll start the day with a demonstration of some painting techniques which you will have time to test out first if you’re not a confident painter.

Once you’re happy with the techniques you’ll spend the rest of the day painting your animal heads and we’ll finish with a quick demonstration of how to attach a ring to the back so it can be hung as soon as you get it home.

All materials provided but you will need to bring your own books/images/drawings of animals to work with.

Bring your wildest, most creative fashion-styling ideas to this weekend workshop and make your very own Couture Creature!

Choosing from a cat, mouse, rabbit or lamb, you'll learn the process from pattern design and cutting, to hand-sewing and stuffing your doll, and finally to a range of fabric manipulation techniques to create the fabulous clothing for your utterly unique work of art!!

Day 1
Doll construction day.

You'll start by choosing which animal you want to make and from which of the available fabrics. Abigail will take you through the process of pattern design and construction to sewing and stuffing your doll and adding it's face detail.

Day 2
Costume creation day.

Abigail will demonstrate a variety of manipulation techniques to help you explore the possibilities to create your doll's costume from your own ideas, sketches and source materials. There'll be a huge variety of coloured, patterned and textured fabrics, paints, natural and found objects available for you to work with, but feel free to additionally being any of your own!
